Cherohala Challenge: CANCELLED PDF Print E-mail

Cherohala Challenge is cancelled due to the Hwy 129 Closure

Cherohala fans,
We’re sad to report that we are canceling the Cherohala Challenge. A major rockslide on Hwy 129 (The Dragon) will keep the road closed through the end of June. We considered alternate routes but were unable to find one we considered safe and challenging.

We also felt that the Dragon closure will put too much additional vehicular traffic on the Skyway for an out and back route. The Cherohala Challenge will return in 2011 so check the website www.smwbike.org for details.

Registration opens February 15th, 2010. Check back on the website for registration details.

DUE TO THE EPIC NATURE OF THIS EVENT AND THE ENORMOUS EFFORTS REQUIRED BY THE VOLUNTEERS TO STAFF THE REST STOPS AND SAG SUPPORT THERE WILL BE NO DAY OF RIDE REGISTRATION.

Join us on June 12th, 2010 for the 11th Annual Cherohala Challenge. In addition to the 115-mile Challenge and the 62-mile Metric Challenge, there will be a "Ride the Valley" 50-mile route for those who prefer wonderful scenery along gently rolling terrain. All routes start and finish at the Tellico Plains visitor's Center

The Challenge: A 115 mile route takes riders up The Dragon (with its famous 318 curves over 11 miles) and UP and over the Cherohala Skyway. These legendary ribbons of pavement are joined by scenic, rolling, country roads in Tennessee and North Carolina. Together they create an unforgettable epic ride with over 9,000 feet of elevation gain. Make no mistake, the Cherohala Challenge is an epic ride. All riders taking on the Challenge are expected to have the fitness and experience to finish an epic ride.
